Geography

What makes a good Geography student at Blueberry Park?

Someone who holds the world in their hands. They have an awareness of, and interest in the diverse world which surrounds them. It is someone who enquires about and explores through mapping and fieldwork. Geographers find fascination in the world and make global connections with people and the environment.

About Geography

Geography is designed to promote a love of, and interest in people, communities and the environment. It should provide first-hand learning experiences, and allowing children to develop geographical knowledge, understanding and skills for life. It will also help them build resilience and becoming creative, critical thinkers. Through the study of geography, they will celebrate and welcome differences within our school community and beyond. Their learning will be underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values. We provide enhancement opportunities to engage learning and believe that childhood should be a happy, investigative and enquiring time where there are no limits to curiosity and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge. At Blueberry Park, the teaching of Geography will motivate children to find out about the world around them and enable them to recognise the importance of sustainable development. Through their work in Geography, children will learn about their local area and compare this with other regions of the United Kingdom and the rest of the world. There is a focus on location and place knowledge as well as geographical skills. Through their growing knowledge and understanding of human geography, our children will gain an appreciation of life in other cultures. In addition, children will study a variety of physical features using subject specific vocabulary. Children will collect and analyse data from a range of sources and communicate this in a variety of ways, including maps, numbers and writing. Where possible, the study of this subject is cross curricular and children are provided with an understanding of what it means to be a global citizen.
